MN-S marks opening of affordable housing project in La Ronge

Métis Nation–Saskatchewan (MN-S) held a ribbon cutting ceremony in La Ronge on Thursday to celebrate the opening of the two modular duplexes along Robertson Drive.

The affordable housing project was made possible through a $1.5 million investment from the MN-S. The two-storey duplexes include three bedrooms, two bathrooms, kitchen and living room areas, as well as washer and dryers.

“The opening of these new affordable housing units is more than a ribbon-cutting,” said MN-S Secretary Marlene Hansen.

“It is a response to the real, urgent needs of the Métis families in this region. The four homes were designed with care and love to serve larger families and help address the issues of overcrowding in our communities.”

The duplexes were moved on site in November, and occupancy will begin in September. Three out of the four units already have tenants, and applications can still be submitted for the fourth.

These four units mark the first Métis-exclusive housing available in La Ronge. Just down the street, MN-S will also be opening a third accessible duplex in the coming months, thanks to a $710,000 investment from the Saskatchewan Housing Corporation, which will cover the majority of the capital costs.

Northern Region 1 Representative Laura Burnouf explained that the demand for affordable housing is high in Northern Saskatchewan.

“Métis families have safe surroundings here for our young people. The school is not too far away, the playgrounds,” she remarked.

“The parents and caregivers will take pride in making these places their homes. When children are raised in healthy surroundings, the odds for success are greatly improved. We look forward to the future projects that will keep our families housed and provide relief for families who are unable to afford this kind of good, safe housing.”
