For the third consecutive Canada Summer Games, Team Saskatchewan Men’s Baseball has found itself on the podium, this time with a hard-fought 4–2 bronze medal victory over Prince Edward Island on Saturday night.

The win marks another proud chapter in a legacy that began in 2017, when Saskatchewan captured its first-ever gold medal in baseball at the Games. That year, the team triumphed over Manitoba in front of a sold-out crowd at Shaw Park. In 2022, it was a bronze against Team BC. Now in 2025, history repeated itself with yet another medal, under the guidance of longtime Head Coach Greg Brons of Saskatoon.

For Brons, who has been involved in nearly every Canada Games since 1989, as a fan, a player, and a coach, this year’s medal is especially meaningful. He confirmed this would be his final time leading the team at the Games.

“I’ve been at almost every single Canada Games since 1989,” Brons said after the game. “In 1989 I was a kid, a fan; in 1993 I was a player… This was special to end it with a medal. Going in, you always want a medal, but it’s not easy when you’re in that tough pool with Quebec, Alberta, B.C., and Ontario.”

Brons praised his players’ grit and resilience. “I told them from day one, it’s not about who throws the hardest, who hits the furthest, and who runs the fastest. The best player out there is the player that believes in himself. And these kids did.”

Brons also reflected on the wider impact of the Canada Games.

“It’s so good for the kids. They have so much fun, not only in the Games, but around the Athletes’ Village. They meet so many people. The opening ceremonies, the kids always love it. It’s a great atmosphere. It’s money well spent by our government. We’re breeding future leaders here.”

Saskatchewan’s success wasn’t limited to the baseball diamond. On the beach, Team Sask also earned bronze in Women’s Beach Volleyball, with Erika Markentin and Alexa Smith defeating Team Alberta 2–1 in a thrilling three-set match.

With those two bronze medals, Saskatchewan now sits at four total medals as the Games prepare to enter their second week of competition.

The 2025 Canada Summer Games are also making history with the debut of women’s baseball, which kicks off Monday, August 18. Saskatchewan’s first game is set for Tuesday, August 19 at 12 p.m. NST / 8:30 a.m. CST, marking another milestone for baseball in the province.
