New RCMP detachment approved for La Ronge

Construction of a new RCMP detachment is expected to proceed next spring.

An email to larongeNOW from Saskatchewan RCMP states the project has been approved, and the agency is in the latter stages of finalizing details relating to construction and design and hope to have more updates as those stages unfold.

That’s welcome news to La Ronge council, which has passed a motion to sell the RCMP a section of land in the industrial park between WayNorth Towing and the recycling depot.

“Generally, this is seen as a positive development for the region,” said La Ronge Administrator Lyle Hannan.

“The new location will provide better access to the highway, which should result in quicker and safer responses. New facilities are great for attraction and retention of staff. We are also excited about the possibility of the current site being repurposed for housing in the future.”

The timeline for construction is expected to begin in 2026 and last until some time in 2027. Up to this point, the municipality has been coordinating site options, site servicing needs such as water and sewer services, as well as negotiating land sale details.
