Ice Wolves win one, lose one during weekend home games

The Ice Wolves earned their first win of the season on Saturday against the Estevan Bruins.

“It was great. I thought the boys played a good 45 minutes,” Ice Wolves Head Coach Kevin Kaminski.

The first goal of the game came from Waylon Gardipy of the Ice Wolves with an assist from Ryder Mckinnon 15 seconds into the first period. The Bruins followed it with two goals in the second period, before Connor Hoemsen tied the game with assists from William Knox and Kasen Harrold.

A little over three minutes into the third, Hoemsen earned his second goal of the night with Knox and Ryder McAslan with the assist. A third goal by the Bruins, however, pushed the game into overtime but Knox was able to score a final goal to end the game 4-3.

The Ice Wolves were hoping to continue that success during an afternoon game against the Bruins on Sunday, but it wasn’t meant to be. That game was also pushed into overtime and it saw the Bruins win 3-2.

Ice Wolves’ Mattias De Zen earned a goal during the first period, followed by a goal by Gardipy in the second.

“The sacrifice wasn’t there tonight and that’s something we’ve got improve on,” Kaminski said.

“We let points slide kind of like we did last year and then next thing you know, you come down to the last game, and you miss playoffs. I know it’s one point, but we need to get the extra points. We’re in last place in the league, so we got to play with urgency and desperation.”

The Ice Wolves currently have one win and six losses. Their next home game is Oct. 14 against the Warman Wolverines.
