Restoration of La Ronge signs now complete

Work has been completed on five new signs throughout the Town of La Ronge.

Mosquito Workshop owner Greg Lobb began work on the signs in mid-July and will wrap up the project on Oct. 7. The signs include the welcome sign where Highway 2 meets Highway 102, as well as ones for Fietz Park, Morley Wilson Park, David Patterson Park and Riese Park.

Town administration confirmed with larongeNOW the approximate cost to complete the work is $20,000.

“I thank the town for letting me take this on. It’s been a huge impact on my business and my skill set. It’s very important for the town for these [signs] to be vibrant,” Lobb remarked.

“It’s been exciting and it’s been humbling and it’s been challenging. There’s a lot of times when I looked at what I am doing and where I should be going and I think ‘why am I here? What have I got myself into?’ But I think I did OK.”

Lobb explained the signs originally went up in 2006 or 2007 and he noted there was never any restoration work done since then. He added the company that created the signs has since gone out of business and he had to do his own interpretation of the art that was presented.

As part of the refurbishment, the wood was given a heavy-duty finish and the paint was redone with an airless sprayer, as well as brush and roller work.

“Depending on the sign, a lot of it was stripping the sign down to its bare essentials and rebuilding it back from there. A few of the signs I got lucky and I didn’t have to go too far, just some patching and touchups,” Lobb said.

“This was all done by hand, so it has been fun. It’s been a lot of fun.”

The signs are expected to remain in their new state for 15 to 20 years.
