The Lac La Ronge Indian Band (LLRIB) is saddened to announce the passing of Elder John Paul (JP) McKenzie.

A media release issued Wednesday describes McKenzie as a respected leader, teacher, and lifelong contributor to community life whose wisdom and kindness touched many.

“Elder McKenzie was a pillar of strength and guidance for our people,” said Chief Tammy Cook-Searson.

“His wisdom, leadership, and kindness will continue to guide us as we honour his life and carry forward his teachings.”

McKenzie dedicated much of his life to the betterment of his community. He served on the Council of Elders for the Lac La Ronge Indian Band, where his traditional knowledge and steady guidance shaped important community decisions. A man of deep faith, he also served as a Lay Reader for the Anglican Church, leading prayers, services, and supporting families in times of need.

McKenzie was also a school committee member in Grandmother’s Bay throughout the 1980s and 1990s, helping to strengthen local education and support opportunities for children and youth. He also played a key role in the early development of the Lac La Ronge Indian Child and Family Services program, helping ensure that care for families remained rooted in culture, compassion, and community.

As a strong advocate for traditional knowledge, land preservation, and trapline stewardship, McKenzie was known for his humility, kindness, and generosity. He often shared his catch from the lake with anyone in need and was dedicated to passing down his teachings and values to younger generations.

Community members and friends are invited to attend the wake and funeral services to honour Elder McKenzie’s life, leadership, and legacy.

Wake services for McKenzie will be held on Oct. 22 at 5 p.m. at the Holy Trinity Anglican Church in Stanley Mission. The funeral service will follow on Oct. 23 at the same location.
