SUMA resolutions to be discussed at town council meeting

Jan 26, 2026 | 4:16 PM

Air Ronge council is hopeful the Town of La Ronge and the Lac La Ronge Indian Band will support two resolutions they’d like to bring forward at the next Saskatchewan Urban Municipalities Association (SUMA) annual general meeting in April.

The first resolution they are seeking support for is to have SUMA advocate the provincial a federal governments to maintain existing fuel breaks and expand fuel mitigation efforts, including vegetation management and other approved measures, to reduce wildfire risk and enhance community safety.

The second resolution would call on SUMA to advocate both governments to maintain the containment line created by bulldozers for fire guarding and prevention purposes, to ensure it remains functional, accessible, and effective throughout the fire season and as conditions warrant for the Village of Air Ronge.

Those resolutions, which were decided upon by the village last week, will be discussed by La Ronge council at a regular meeting this evening.

Other items on the town council agenda include how to spend a Community Safety and Well Being Grant, which was received several years ago, as well as a grant request from Pre-Cam’s Community School Council.

In 2021, tri-community leadership were given a $30,000 provincial Community Safety and Well Being Grant, but only spent approximately $12,000. The province has indicated that the funds will need to be spent over the next year and representatives from the tri-communities recently met to discuss potential use of the funds.

Those potential uses include supporting expenses or renovations at the band’s overnight wellness centre, hire a third-party mediator and consultant to develop a regional governance model to better coordinate and deliver services to residents throughout the region, use the funds to support more delivery by school recreation positions in all the tri-community schools. Those provide guidance, and support to youth through culture, sport, and recreation, or spent the money on wildfire preparations and training.

Finally, Pre-Cam is requesting an undisclosed amount (more than $5,000), to help support building a new playground. The school council wishes to raise about $150,000 to replace the current back playground as several structures are worn, outdated and/or no longer meet safety standards and will be removed.
