Elementary schools fundraising for new playgrounds

Jan 28, 2026 | 4:58 PM

Local elementary schools are fundraising to replace existing playgrounds.

La Ronge’s Pre-Cam Community School is looking to fundraise $150,000, while Air Ronge’s Gordon Denny Community School wants to raise $100,000 or more. Gordon Denny Principal Marlina Ballantyne explained they want to replace the Grade 1 and 2 playground with something more accessible for all students.

“It’s outdated,” she said. “We are trying to reach a $50,000 mark. If we do, then we can apply for the Saskatchewan Playground Grant that the province is offering, but we need to have $50,000 secured before we can apply for it.”

Gordon Denny has already done some fundraising for the playground and have more planned events to do so coming up in the next few months. Ballantyne noted she would like the new playground to be finished by the start of next school year.

Meanwhile, the Grades 3 to 6 playground at Pre-Cam is also outdated or no longer meets safety standards. Several structures will be removed in the near future.

“Recent student surveys have shown a strong desire [for] new outdoor play spaces that support their physical activity, mental wellbeing and social connection,” a letter from School Community Council Chair Genevieve Candelora to town council states.

“Pre-Cam’s School Community Council wants to give our kids – and the children of our community – an accessible and inclusive place that inspires creativity, active play, and connection which reflects the voices of our students.”

The letter added due to budget constraints, Pre-Cam and the Northern Lights School Division are unable to solely afford the project. To move forward, they must rely on private donations, partnerships and grant opportunities.

At a regular meeting on Monday, town council voted to give Pre-Cam $5,000 through its Community Grants Policy.
