Grey Cup tours across the region

The Saskatchewan Roughriders have begun their Grey Cup community tour starting in northeast Saskatchewan.

The CFL title trophy first arrived at the Humboldt Broncos game on Saturday night, before travelling to the Provincial Mixed Doubles Curling Championships in Nipawin on Sunday morning.

Following those two stops, Riders’ offensive lineman Logan Ferland got to spend most of Monday with the cup in his hometown of Melfort.

“I’ve definitely been looking forward to this day for a while, one of those things you have marked on the calendar, for sure. It just feels great to be out here in Melfort,” Ferland told northeastNOW.

“It’s nice to be a little part of this northeast journey with the cup, and obviously, Melfort was definitely one I had circled on my to-do list, and one I wanted to get to. It was a really great day, one that somehow exceeded my expectations. We had a lot of people come out, so it was just really great to be here.”

Parts of Ferland’s journey included a visit to the radio station which included an on-air interview, talks at all of the schools in town, numerous visits to local businesses, a limo ride, and autographs and pictures at the Kerry Vickar Centre.

And while he said it’s tough to surpass the feeling of winning a Grey Cup with your home province’s team, a trip back to the hometown with the trophy beside you sure comes close.

“It was absolutely the dream, just having the ability to come back here and speak to a lot of the students that I shared the same hallways with, truly was one of a kind experience. It feels amazing, definitely a full circle moment, and the perfect way to close off the 2025 season,” added Ferland.

“I just had a great time sharing the Cup with the fans, and now it’s about running it back so we can do this again next year. Really want to circle this on the calendar again.”

Next up for the Grey Cup will be a visit to James Smith Cree Nation on Tuesday, before taking in a Raiders and Regina Pats game in Prince Albert later in the evening.
