A teen from La Loche is fundraising to attend a major international tournament this summer in Thailand.

Clearwater River Dene Nation member Tyrrique Lemaigre was recently selected to compete at the Amazing MuayThai World Festival, which is scheduled for June 25 to 29 in Bangkok.

“I was training mixed martial arts at my school and my coach had brought up tryouts for muay thai at Stuart’s (Fontaine) gym,” he said.

“We just went there and I tried out and that’s how I got into this. It was a tryout where you hit pads, spar and show our skills.”

Muay thia is a full contact combat sport, which combines the use of fists, elbows, knees and shins. It is a growing sport in Saskatchewan, mostly in larger urban centres.

Lemaigre is a beginner to Muaythai, but has been learning mixed martial arts for the last two years. He has been training under his coach Jeremy Haineault.

In order to attend the WBC Muay Thai Festival, Lemaigre will need to fundraise at least $6,000. He’s hoping to get some sponsorship, as well as financial assistance from his band.

“It’s for the experience. It’s an international event. It’s going to be a good time,” Lemaigre said.
