Peanut Productions awarded half of grant request

La Ronge council has decided to provide Peanut Productions with $2,000 as per its Community Grant Policy.

Peanut Productions had asked council for $4,000 to help offset the majority of production costs. In their application, they indicated they had pledged $12,000 towards the long-term care fundraising initiative, and offsetting production costs will maximize their contribution.

Some members of council took issue with that reason, especially if other partners in the region weren’t also being asked to contribute.

“I’m a little bit uncomfortable with that, especially with the framing because we make a lot of contributions overall,” said Coun. Abby Besharah.

“I’m happy for offsetting operational costs and the set up of the show and supporting the show, but if it’s based on the fact they’ve committed $12,000 to long-term care.”

Peanut Productions will perform their next play April 22 to 25. It is called Dearly Departed by David Bottrell and Jessie Jones.

Council also passed a motion to authorize administration to execute leases with the La Ronge Minor Hockey Association and the La Ronge Skating Club. The organizations are seeking spaces which include metal, grated lockers in the main hallway, an equipment storage closet, and a changeroom with a single toilet and two sinks.

While specific details are yet to be determined, administration noted the leases would likely only cost $1 as they are community groups.
