Ski club perseveres following wildfire damage

Members of the La Ronge Ski Club are happy with how the season unfolded considering the amount of work they needed to do following last June’s wildfire destruction.

“I think it went pretty good given the challenges we faced and the clean up after the Pisew fire,” said Director of Communication Matt Mazurik.

“I was just kind of reflecting not too long ago about what happened for a ski club in March. March was a pretty phenomenal month for the club. We hosted three major events. We had the Saskaloppet, a school fun ski event and the SaskCup Races.”

In addition, educational ski programs hosted by the club also came to an end in March. Combined with their race team, Mazurik noted the programs attracted about 60 young athletes.

While planned events have now come to an end, some members are still taking advantage of the snowy conditions on the trails.

“There’s lots of snow out there compared to last year. Last year, all of a sudden the snow was gone by the end of March and we were on to other things. This year, it’s sticking around a little bit longer,” Mazurik said.

“As long as it keeps on freezing every night, the trails will remain in pretty decent shape. I was just looking back at some previous last skis in previous years. I know a few years back we were still skiing the Hornet Bay Loop on April 23, so these late seasons do happen on a fairly regular basis.”

In the coming months, club volunteers will continue monitoring the trail system for fallen trees, spend some time marking the trails better, and complete the checkpoint one warm up shelter. Members recently finished insulating the shelter and will now work on finishing the walls and ceiling, installing windows and adding siding.

“The other project that is on the go is we need to rebuild our timing hut that burnt last year in the fire,” Mazurik remarked.

“That looks like it is going to be a collaboration with Churchill Community High School. One of their carpentry classes is going to rebuild the timing hut for us. We’re just working out the finer details right now.”
