SaskPower investing $270 million on Northern Transmission System

SaskPower will be spending approximately $270 million to reinforce its transmission system in Northern Saskatchewan.

“SaskPower’s Northern Transmission System projects are intended to facilitate the development of new and expanded mining operations in the province’s Far North,” an email from spokesperson Joel Cherry to larongeNOW states.

“The new infrastructure will reinforce the northern electrical system, which will service any future developments or expanded mining operations in the area ranging from Creighton to the Athabasca region.”

A major component includes a new 138 kV subphase switch and sectionalization on an existing power line route near Taylor Bay. SaskPower will also build new power lines to connect the station to a proposed new uranium mine site in the area.

“The new equipment involves components in the electrical supply network that will help to ensure reliable and uninterrupted delivery of electrical service,” the email notes.

“It allows for portions of the electrical system to be isolated when required to perform maintenance, or during unplanned outages.”

Early site work for the new switching station was completed in 2025 and work will continue expanding the station and powerlines in 2026 and 2027. SaskPower will also upgrade equipment at the Island Falls Switching Station.

Final energization of both sites is expected to occur in early 2029.

“Northern Transmission System work has already begun at some locations, and other aspects are still in the planning phase,” the email adds.

“Crew sizes will vary depending on availability and by contractor and will fluctuate over the duration of the project. SaskPower works to include Indigenous businesses in its procurement processes, and will also continue to work to create opportunities for involvement of local communities.”

In addition, SaskPower is exploring further infrastructure to support the province’s Energy Security Strategy. That includes the recently completed Pelican Narrows to McIlvenna Bay Transmission Line, the North-South Transmission Systems Interconnection, and an expansion of the Northwest Transmission System.
