Public invited to Co-op re-opening ceremony, family phyisican walk and barbecue

There are a couple of events local residents won’t want to miss this week.

Lake Country Co-op will be celebrating a re-grand opening of the La Ronge Food Store on May 14. A ribbon-cutting will be held at 11 a.m., followed by a barbecue with all proceeds going to the new La Ronge long-term care facility.

The event will include in-store sampling from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. with special sales starting Thursday and continuing until Sunday. There will also be five prizes up for grabs, including a 60-second food shopping spree.

The Lake Country Co-op began an $8 million renovation to the La Ronge Food Store in 2025. It included an upgrade to the interior and exterior of the building, every department underwent a full refresh, the warehouse space was expanded, and there’s been improvements to product availability to offer a wider selection of items.

Lake Country Co-op has also introduced new specialty offerings, including a popcorn kitchen and a dedicated candy space.

On May 15, local doctors will be hosting a walk and free barbecue as part of Family Physicians Day. Dr. Sean Groves explained the walk will begin at the local clinic at 11 a.m. and its distance will depend on the wellness of those who attend.

The walk and barbecue is being sponsored by the Saskatchewan Medical Association and the Saskatchewan College of Family Physicians.

“[It’s] an opportunity for us as physicians to connect with patients, and just talk about life as a doctor, but also to give patients the opportunity to just let them know how much we appreciate them being part of our lives and our careers,” Groves said.

“All the doctors at the clinic that day will be attending, and anyone who is available and in the community and not working that day will also be around. We’re going to continue our services at the hospital and for our outlying community flights, but everyone else who is around will be attending with our clinic staff.”
