Theatre in the Park coming to La Ronge, Prince Albert

“There’s a lot of laugh, there’s a lot of fun, and I think sometimes the adults are surprised by how thoughtful the story ends up.”

That’s how Director Mackenzie Dawson describes The Colour of the Town – a new play being presented by the independent theatre company SUM Theatre, based out of Saskatoon.

The show is meant for all ages with a specific focus on families with children. Free shows will be upcoming in Prince Albert and La Ronge.

“Ultimately, it circles around this idea of what if we have different ideas about what’s best for our community, and how can we have those tricky discussions with our neighbours when they disagree and still work together to ensure that our communities are moving together in a good way. Our communities do need this kind of collaboration between all people in order for them to be strong places to live.”

Performances will be held in La Ronge at Morley Wilson Park on June 2 at 7 p.m. and Pre-Cam Community School at 1 p.m. on June 3 for elementary students.

On June 3, showings will be held in Prince Albert’s Kinsmen Park at 1:30 p.m. and 7:30 p.m. by the east picnic shelter. The 1:30 p.m. show is for local students.

“It is a great program for everyone. Our target audience does end up being families with kids, and at the same time, we will get adults of all ages who will come out, and they find they are really taken with the music and the story and the design,” Dawson explained.

“For folks who think maybe theatre isn’t for them, the only thing it costs is 45 minutes.”

This will mark the fifth year Theatre in the Park will be held in La Ronge. The town typically provides a $5,000 community grant, but has moved towards including the show to their Sask. Lotteries application in the amount of $5,000.

The City of Prince Albert is contributing $200, but Dawson noted Theatre in the Park also receives donations from community organizations and foundations in the larger centres to make the shows possible.
