More details have been released about the new RCMP detachment being built in La Ronge.

RCMP senior project manager Sherri Kobelsky led a presentation at a regular town council meeting on Monday. She explained construction on the approximately 18,000-foot building is on track to be completed by the end of 2027 and officially open in the spring of 2028.

“We still want to have some more conversations about what that front will look like and who we can engage locally to make the building fit into the surrounding landscape a little bit better and just be a little bit more meaningful,” Kobelsky said.

“We’re on the fence so far on what our materials will be, what the colours will be, we may change that material … on the very front of the building.”

Site preparation began in February and pilings are now being placed. At the peak of construction, about 40 workers will be on site.

The new building will include a multipurpose room next to the front reception, which will be made available to the community for different meetings and events when it is not needed for RCMP operations.

It will also include an area dedicated to victim services, as well as an emergency diesel generator. The detachment is designed to be a net zero carbon facility.

There has been one setback since construction of the detachment began. An environmental assessment determined there’s a nesting site for great blue herons in the vicinity. Great blue herons are a provincially protected migratory bird.

“We actually have an environmental consultant hired,” Kobelsky remarked.

“They have been monitoring the birds, they have been monitoring bird health, so that is something that we’re mandated to do as part of our role as federal government.”

La Ronge RCMP, which is one of the busiest detachments in the province, serves a wide area and communities such as Sucker River and Hall Lake.
