Visitor centre hosts grand re-opening

Approximately 150 people attended the re-grand opening of the Woodlands and Waterways Regional Visitor Centre in Air Ronge on Sunday.

“The purpose of the re-grand opening was to let both locals and visitors know that the centre is once again open and operating after a temporary closure,” wrote Angela Nykyfork, the new general manager in an email to larongeNOW.

“We wanted to reconnect with the community, showcase the centre’s services, highlight the talented local artisans whose handcrafted products are available in the gift shop, and to welcome artisans interested in displaying and selling their work through the centre.”

Nykyfork stated since re-opening, the centre has expanded its offerings by partnering with the La Ronge Nordic Ski Club to provide a variety of brand new skis available for rent during the winter season, giving people an affordable way to enjoy the local ski trails. There is also an archive room curated by Graham Guest.

Staff are also trying to be open seven days a week throughout the busy summer season to better serve both local shoppers and tourists seeking information, souvenirs, gifts and regional tourism services.

“In addition, we are helping support community initiatives by providing a space for the local Youth Travel Club to sell assorted baked goods as a fundraiser. The baking has been very popular with visitors and a great way to help local youth raise funds for their travel opportunities,” Nykyfork noted.

“Also, a room rental is equipped with a screen for presentations and slideshows that non- profit organizations can use free of charge.”

Nykyfork added the visitor centre is an important community and tourism service. Staff assist visitors and travelers plan their trips, find accommodations, restaurants, fishing lodges, campgrounds, attractions, and local services. They encourage them to stay longer and support businesses throughout the community.

“We are proud to showcase local artisans, tourism experiences, and the many stories that make our community so special,” she added.

“I am very proud of our community, and the talent and entrepreneurs we support. If it wasn’t for them, we couldn’t have this gift shop. It gives the people a reason to visit.”

In 2023 and 2024, the visitor centre faced closures following issues with finances and then a staffing distruption.
