Local boy raises $2,300 for new playground

The feeling of sheer excitement couldn’t be missed during an assembly at La Ronge’s Pre-Cam Community School on Tuesday as students celebrated one of their own.

Grade 4 student Tyler Richards received a standing ovation for fundraising around $2,300 to go towards a new playground, which will be installed at the school next month.

His effort to collect cans and bottles began in May and continued throughout the summer. He had earned $700 before his mother, Allyson, took to social media in August asking the public if they had any recyclables to donate to him. Her request was well-received and the large amount of donations that came in pushed the amount raised well over his goal of $1,000.

“I’m very proud. I don’t think I could be any prouder. It just shows what a great heart he’s got. Words can’t describe it to be honest,” Allyson Richards said.

She also spoke about the excitement students showed during Tuesday’s welcome back assembly.

“I saw some of the facial expressions of some of the students and their eyes were just wide open. They were just amazed, and it truly brought a tear to the eye. People were excited about it and maybe this will help motivate the last little bit of money that needs to come in,” Allyson Richards noted.

Pre-Cam Principal Ryan Kuppenbender told students what Tyler Richards was able to do achieve was inspirational, adding he volunteered a lot of time and effort to make the donation possible.

“He has worked so hard to raise money and we want to make sure we recognize his excellent efforts,” Kuppenbender explained.

Tyler Richards added he can’t wait until he can use the new playground and he is thankful for everyone who supported him in his endeavour.

“It was a big job for one kid,” he said.

The fundraiser for the playground is now at approximately $120,000 of a $150,000 goal.
