Ice Wolves relocation to JRMCC to cost $250K

The Lac La Ronge Indian Band Jonas Roberts Memorial Community Centre (JRMCC) will require $250,000 in upgrades to be ready for the Ice Wolves relocation later this year.

“Our goal is to have everything done by the end of July, so once the training camp starts up and the team starts their preparations for next season, we want to be ready for that,” said facility director of sports and recreation Kevin Roberts.

“It’s a great opportunity for us and we’re looking forward to putting in some work to make everything happen.”

Construction of a new dressing room in the former boardroom began on Wednesday and that portion of the upgrades is expected to be completed in the next week or so. Work will also commence soon on new office space where the skate sharpening/hockey shop is located, and a merchandise booth will be placed in the southwest corner of the running track.

“We’re looking at expanding the players benches. We’re just getting quotes on those,” Roberts noted.

“Once the ground thaws and spring comes around, we’re looking at expanding our parking in the back. That work is ready to go when the time comes.”

Two-level benches will also be purchased to increase seating capacity by 112. The facility currently has a capacity of 305 with enough standing room on the track and lower levels for another few hundred people.

Of the estimated $250,000 earmarked for the upgrades, $100,000 will be spent on a new score clock. Roberts explained sponsorship for it will be announced this week.

The Ice Wolves approached the band about the relocation in 2024 and Roberts was asked to do a presentation to the team’s board in February. The day after that presentation, Ice Wolves management was convinced the relocation would be a good move.

Roberts is excited for a Junior A level hockey team to call the Jonas Roberts Memorial Community Centre home. He added the band still has plans for a large expansion of the facility some day.

“It’s just the natural progression of a recreation facility, always growing, always expanding and trying to improve what we do here by just providing extra services,” Roberts said.
