Local curlers claim SHSAA district title for third straight year

La Ronge’s Churchill Community High School curling team are district champions for the third year in a row.

The team, which consists of Heidi Hardcastle (skip), Alison O’Brien (lead), Idabelle Llorente Roque (second), and Jovie Herperger (third) participated in the Saskatchewan High Schools Athletic Association (SHSAA) tournament on Wednesday at the Prince Albert Golf and Curling Club.

They went undefeated in both games they played. The first won 11-0 against St. Mary High School and then 18-0 against Meath Park Public School. Coach James Kissick believes their success is due to the hard work they have put into this curling season.

“They’ve put a lot of focus into setting goals and working towards those goals,” he said.

“They haven’t necessarily met all of their goals, but they’re doing a good job on trying to make sure the season is worthwhile.”

In addition, he thinks joining the CURLSASK High Performance Program last fall has also been very beneficial.

“They’ve had a chance to go ahead and meet up with a few different coaches that have given them some tips in addition to the local people who are helping them out,” Kissick noted.

“A lot of the local curling club members have been giving them advice and tips throughout the season as they play at the Monday night business league.”

The team was also given the honour of hosting SHSAA regionals at the Mel Hegland Uniplex later this month. It’s been many years, if ever, since La Ronge hosted the event.

“We felt like we had a good chance to go ahead and at least make it as far as regionals this year, so we put in a bid and they gave us the spot,” Kissick added.

“I hope it helps to showcase the sport in our community and brings a little bit more interest in the sport.”

Teams already confirmed to compete at regionals are St. Mary High School and Martensville High School. The top two teams at the event will advance to provincials.
