Beatty returns to La Ronge Ice Wolves

Former coach Bob Beatty will be assisting the Ice Wolves until the end of the season. 

Beatty served as the team’s head coach from 2004 to 2013, leading the Ice Wolves to two Saskatchewan Junior Hockey League championships in 2010 and 2011. He was invited to rejoin the team on a temporary basis after Kevin Kaminski took personal leave last month. 

“I was here nine years. I have a lot of friends here. It’s always been a soft spot in my heart, so it wasn’t hard to make a decision to come help out a team that I have a lot of fond memories with,” Beatty explained. 

“I’m just filling in for Kevin and helping Kyle [Graham] out. Kyle is doing a great job. He obviously knows the team; he’s been with the team for a few years. He knows them personally and I’m just giving him some support basically.” 

It has been a difficult season for the Ice Wolves. They are currently last in the league with nine wins and 42 losses in 51 games.

There are six regular season games remaining, including a home game this evening against the Melfort Mustangs. The final game of the season is scheduled for March 14 against the Flin Flon Bombers.

“Where they’re at is a difficult position for sure. There’s lots to like about the team. There’s some good, young talent,” Beatty remarked. 

“I have to say we had a real difficult year one year I was coaching and that was the year prior to us winning our first championship, so there’s lots to build on. I am sure the scouting staff, and Kevin and Kyle certainly identified where they need to improve. They’ll have a task ahead of them over the summer to get that executed.” 

After leaving the Ice Wolves, Beatty spent many years coaching teams including the Cowichan Valley Capitals and Nanaimo Clippers in the British Columbia Hockey League. Most recently, he has coached in the Indigenous Sports Academy and a U15 team in his hometown of Watrous.
