Little Black Dress Event nets $12K for Boreal Animal Rescue

Boreal Animal Rescue was the recipient of approximately $12,000 from the Little Black Dress Event held last weekend at La Ronge’s Kikinahk Friendship Centre.

“We had no idea this event was going to be such a success. We’re just very grateful to our community members for showing their support,” said Boreal Founder Chelsie Breeze.

“Thank you to all the generous sponsors and donors. We’re just absolutely tickled.”

The Little Black Dress Event was launched by Judy Hanke and Tracy Fiske as a way to raise money for local causes. In previous years, the Piwapan Women’s Centre and Men of the North were recipients.

This year, more than 100 tickets were sold and an additional 30 people volunteered. The event began with welcoming speeches and recognition for special guests including La Ronge’s Joe and Linda Hordyski, Shannon McLeod from Stanley Mission, and Northern Animal Rescue. Breeze noted there was also a supper, entertainment, music and dancing.

Considering Boreal Animal Rescue is a new organization and doesn’t yet have charitable status, Breeze explained receiving such a large donation is very important.

“It’s literally what keeps us on the road, what keeps us able to spray and neuter animals, supply foster supplies to people holding animals for us, transport animals. It is crucial we have those funds to keep doing what we’re doing,” she said.

Boreal Animal Rescue was launched in September 2025, and in those first four months leading up to the New Year, about 100 dogs were rescued. The organization mostly rescues animals in Northern Saskatchewan, but Breeze added no dogs are left behind.

“2026 has been absolutely amazing. We’ve done so much work,” she said.

“We worked our butts off all winter long to keep the animals warm, safe and fed. We are just taking off. We’re busier than we could ever imagine.”
