Exhibit showcases vibrant snapshot of projects from local art community

It’s the perfect time to check out what the local art community has been up to as the La Ronge Arts Council has their annual member’s exhibit on display at the Alex Robertson Public Library.

This year, there are 40 submissions by 24 artists, which marks a record for the art council. There is a wide variety of art to be seen with mediums such as acrylic, needlepoint, watercolour, photography, spray paint, oil, pastel, pencil, ink and more.

“It’s always really interesting to see what our members are doing and there is always a few new members and a few new media. We always have something a little different every year it seems and it’s just fun to see what everybody is up to,” said arts council board member Caron Dubnick.

“We’ve generally had an April member’s exhibit for many years now and I think there’s a core of people who really look forward to it, and I think it’s becoming a little better known as an option for people to show their work. We have that new beautiful space in the library that is really conducive to showing off people’s work and perhaps more people are seeing the exhibits we’ve had up there because it’s a public space. Maybe that’s attracting some of the visual artists in our community to become members and show their work there.”

Air Ronge’s Greg Lobb is one of the artists who has a piece on display in the exhibit. His is a re-creation of two images taken from a photobooth in Prince Albert’s Gateway Mall in 1992.

Lobb, who was 10 years old at the time, is pictured with his late mother. When he found the strip after her passing, he knew he wanted to do something with it.

His artwork is made from spray paint, and Lobb explained it took him almost four weeks to do all of the cutting for it.

“It’s was a long process. It’s a lot of work with the layers,” he said.

“The piece I have on display there, I cut everything out of mylar, so it was all clear and just basically traced the different layers on each one and I cut everything by hand.”

Those interested in viewing the exhibit can do so during regular hours at the library. In addition, the arts council will be hosting a closing reception April 28 from 7 p.m. to 8 p.m. and they are inviting the public to join them.

“We have coffee, tea and all the fixings and usually some snacks. It’s sort of a potluck kind of event. Some of the artists will be there of course. I don’t know if they will be asked to speak or anything, but they can if they want,” Dubnick noted.

“It’s really just an occasion to get out and chat with the artists and the art-interested community and just see what the members are up to.”
