NSITEP celebrates seven new graduates

May 17, 2026 | 3:21 PM

It was an exciting time on Friday as the Northern Saskatchewan Indigenous Teacher Education Program (NSITEP) in La Ronge celebrated its latest graduating class.

The event occurred at the Jonas Roberts Memorial Community Centre and included five of the seven graduates. Due to snowy weather conditions, two of the graduates were unable to make it, as well as some of the dignitaries.

This year marked the sixth graduating classes since NSITEP was formed in 2019. There are currently more than 50 students enrolled in the four-year Bachelor of Education program, and the 2026 graduates bring the number of people who have successfully completed it to 53.

Even though there were only a handful of graduates in 2026, Program Head Dr. Morris Cook explained their impact will be huge.

“This is the one of the smallest groups we’ve graduated to date,” he remarked.

“Even though they are a small class, they are large in many other ways. They are large in resilience … large in the obstacles you have faced but still chosen to push on. Large in the pride you carry with you since you came to us, and large with what this program represents: a path that keeps getting stronger, even when the numbers are small like this one because the impact is not small, it’s huge.”

Cook noted the graduates will go on to be educational leaders and will guide the future of Northern Saskatchewan.

“You will help our Indigenous youth and the next generation to move forward and shape the reality for tomorrow,” he added.

“You are leaving here with more than certificates, more than gifts. You are leaving with skills, yes, but also with habits. How to be on time when it is hard to be on time. I struggle with that sometimes as well. How to take feedback without taking it personally. How to work safely and consistently and professionally, and how to keep going.”

The NSITEP graduating class of 2026 is Lori Bouvier, Jessica Caisse, Stephanie Gardiner, Kadence Hodgson, Catlyn McCallum, Zacherius McKenzie, Sandra McLeod-Worm.

McKenzie received both the NSITEP Iskotēw Community Fires Award and the award for Strength and Perseverance. The Community Fires Award recognizes exceptional graduating educators who embody the spirit of community-building through culturally responsive teaching practices.
