Several fires burning near Lac La Ronge Provincial Park

The Saskatchewan Public Safety Agency (SPSA) continues to respond to several fires burning near La Ronge.

There’s an ongoing assessment underway for the Highway fire (0.2 hectares) approximately 30 kilometers south of La Ronge. The SPSA noted crews will continue to monitor with infrared scanners over the coming days for any remaining hot spots.

Another three fires, known as the Duck, Drope, and Tikan blazes, are burning either in or near the Lac La Ronge Provincial Park. The Duck fire is north of Grandmother’s Bay.

Type 1 and 2 crews are working the fire with SPSA staff on the line of the Duck fire (477 ha), while Type 3 crews will assist for the mop-up stages on the lower intensity lines of the fire.

Crews are constructing helipads to access the Tikan fire (10 ha) and setting up values protection. Once helipads are established, crews will begin to work the fireline.

As for the Drope fire (4 ha), Type 1 and 2 crews were boating to the fire line Monday. All the above described fires were caused by lightning.

The Lac La Ronge Indian Band (LLRIB) is currently monitoring the wildfire situation.

“Residents are encouraged to stay informed and follow updates from local authorities as conditions can change quickly,” a community notice from the LLRIB stated.

In addition, the Arm fire (6 ha) near Deschambeault Lake is uncontained. Crews have started laying line around the fire edge and they will camp on the island until the fire is contained. Tankers are also working the fire, which was caused by lightning.

There are currently 17 active wildfire burning throughout Saskatchewan. There have been 122 wildfires to date with 258 to date this time last year. The five-year average is 191.
