Freeze, Breeze and Wheeze

Popular triathlon returning after seven years

The Freeze, Breeze and Wheeze Triathlon will be returning to La Ronge in August after a seven-year hiatus.

It’s being organized by Emma Smallwood and a group of volunteers with support from Triathlon Saskatchewan. The last Freeze, Breeze and Wheeze was the 29th annual held in 2019, and it attracted athletes from throughout the province and as far away as Ontario.

“We started making a board to bring it back last year, but it just needed someone to really spearhead it and put the work in to make it happen,” Smallwood explained.

“This year, with how my jobs worked out, I have a lot more flexibility in my life, so I was able to take it on and do that.”

There will be two competitions held with the sprint distance (beginner) consisting of a 500-meter swim, 20-kilometer bike ride and a five-km run. The longer Olympic distance (experienced) will include a one-km swim, a 40-km bike ride and a 10-km run.

Both competitions will begin at Patterson Park Beach for the swimming portion. Athletes will then either bike to Don Allen Trails, or to the Sucker River turnoff along Highway 102 and then back to the Don Allen Trails, before the running portion occurs at the Don Allen Trails.

“We have quite a few people registered already. Lots of people are talking about it. People are trying to figure out their team, who is going to swim, who is going to bike,” Smallwood noted.

“There’s a lot of talk and excitement about it, which makes me really excited to be able to put something on like this in the North, and try to bring a big and fun event to the North instead of always having to travel down south for these events because that is not always accessible for a lot of people.”

The Freeze, Breeze and Wheeze Triathlon will occur Aug. 30 with an 8 a.m. start. Those interested in competing can sign up online here.

While prizes are still being determined, at this time there will be cash up for grabs, as well as Salomon hydration vests and massage certificates.
