Greenhouse project coming together in Bell’s Point

Cook-Studer explained the project is meant to be a classroom for the community, where members can learn about horticulture, agriculture, food production, and more sustainable sources of food. He noted it will particularly benefits Elders and families who will be given the produce once it is harvested.

“It’s the community greenhouse, so we want the community members to feel it is a welcoming space for everybody to come in and kind of be part of the learning opportunity, but things can always evolve in this kind of community space,” Cook-Studer added.

“We can really change whatever kind of vegetables are being produced in there. The opportunities are limitless, so we can expand off of this and start looking at trees, fruit-bearing trees, and some winterized greenhouse options.” 

While this initial greenhouse is being built in Bell’s Point near the youth centre, Cook-Studer said plans are in the work to replicate the project in other LLRIB communities.  

“The other ones can be at schools or wellness centres. There are different options of where these greenhouses can go,” he said.
