‘Deeply alarming’: FSIN demands independent investigation after viral RCMP arrest video
The Federation of Sovereign Indigenous Nations (FSIN) is calling for an immediate independent investigation after a video posted to social media went viral, appearing to show two RCMP officers using force while arresting a woman on Makwa Sahgaiehcan First Nation.
Police confirmed on Tuesday that they asked the Saskatchewan Serious Incident Response Team (SIRT) to investigate the incident, and that SIRT accepted the request. They also said that the officers seen in the video will remain on duty during the investigation.
The video, recorded by bystanders, shows the officers attempting to arrest the woman, who was resisting, between two parked vehicles. During the struggle, one officer appears to strike the woman in the head while the other continues to restrain her.
In a release issued Wednesday, FSIN acknowledged that the video does not capture the full series of events leading up to the arrest, but said the images have raised serious concerns about whether the level of force that was used was justified.
