Leonardite extraction occurring near La Ronge
Leonardite is currently being extracted by Wapaw Bay Resources along the southern shore of Wapawekka Lake.
That’s according to company founder Raymond Potié, who operates the business with his brothers Alphonse Potié and Philippe Potié. Potié discovered the leonardite seam in 1999, it was staked in 2000 and a drilling program commenced in the years following. The site was cleared of timber in 2007 and an initial quarrying operation occurred in that same year.
The 2026 quarrying will be confined to seven hectares and about 200 tons of ore will be extracted. The product, which is used in agricultural fertilizer, will be packed into one-metric ton bags and hauled to a processing plant in Craik.
“We take out the overburden and then we use it to backfill the original pit and then the next time we come we will use overburden to backfill [another] pit and so on. This will go on for a number of years whenever we need it,” Potié explained.
