Treaty 6 celebration draws in thousands of attendees
People have come from far and wide to join in on the 150-year celebration of Treaty 6 being held at Fort Carlton near Duck Lake.
The four-day event began on Thursday and organizers are expecting 1,000 people or more each day, with up to 2,500 estimated to attend on Sunday. The celebration includes a Village of Nations, a vendor and booth marketplace, viewings of the original Treaty 6 parchment, a children’s play area, tours of Fort Carlton, canoe trips, a hand game tournament and more.
In addition, forums are being held each day, which includes insights from Elders and youth, as well as a discussion by Treaty 6 leadership sharing their perspectives on Treaty implementation in the past, present and future.
“I think it is really good with all the different areas we can explore. We have just been through once and we got here this morning and we are finally sitting down. There’s a variety of things for us to see and do and visit,” said Candace Longjohn-Constant of Sturgeon Lake First Nation who was there with her family.
