Zelensky earns bronze at North American competition

“I thought it was going to be just competing to get on the podium for bench press. I didn’t think I was going to be doing anything really on the squat and deadlift, and then considering the prep I had, it actually went quite well, even though I started a new job and had all of these other things going on in my life.”

Zelensky finished behind Angelo Fortino of the United States, who finished first with 838.5-kg (1,848 pounds), and Marlon Mora Piedra of Costa Rica who placed second with 742.5-kg (1,636 pounds). He will compete next at the 2027 Canada Powerlifting National Championships in February 2027 in Nanaimo, BC.

Zelensky is a well-known powerlifter, having participated in multiple competitions every year. He is almost entirely self-funded as he rarely receives sponsorships.

“I know I am going to have these competitions, so I make sure I mind my money leading up to them so I am able to afford to go,” Zelensky explained.

“It’s not too expensive when you think about it in the grand scheme of things. A lot of people are travelling all over the country and the world just for vacations and stuff like that. For me, I will go to a competition and then a few days after that is kind of my vacation. If you get an Airbnb or something like that, it’s pretty affordable.”

Zelensky recently earned a Bachelor of Science in Kinesiology from the University of Saskatchewan in Saskatoon, and he currently works as a carpenter near Lloydminster. He has a gym he likes to work out at in both cities.

“I travel with a barbell, too, so if a gym isn’t quite what I am looking for, at least I have competition standard bar that will make things a bit more standardized from gym to gym,” Zelensky said.
