Sunny and soggy Labour Day weekend

Showers or thunderstorms should start on Sunday, with rain spreading throughout much of the province on Monday as well.

As mentioned, temperatures will plummet as the system rolls through, with daytime highs struggling to reach the mid-teens on Sunday, Monday, and Tuesday in the northeast, Prince Albert, and North Battleford areas. La Ronge is much the same, with rain less likely during that three-day stretch.

Lang said the system that is bringing in the rain and cooler temperatures is coming from the United States.

“It’s kind of unusual for this time of year,” she explained. “We usually don’t see these kinds of weather systems, particularly in September – it’s one of our drier months.”

According to Lang, the system is tapping into moisture from the Gulf of California, which has been abundant this year and has been fueling systems bringing rain and thunderstorms to the province. She said the timing is unfortunate for people looking to kick back and enjoy the last long weekend of summer, and farmers looking to start or continue harvest operations.

After the system leaves the province, the weather should improve toward the middle of next week. Lang said the average high this time of year is 20 C, and she expects conditions to be close to normal around next Wednesday.

Until that happens, she said we’ll have to enjoy the next couple of days before the expected rain arrives.

“Be prepared for severe weather, and also, if you’re going out camping this weekend, make sure to pack the rain gear.”
