Green was definitely the colour for Prince Albert’s Doug Putland when he purchased a Gold Ball Jackpot LOTTO 6/49 ticket from a Rosthern Co-op.

He was decked out in full Riders gear, with his beard dyed to match the colour of the team, as he travelled to take in a game.

But it was the Riders’ other colour that took over when he later checked the ticket to find out the results of the draw and learned he had hit a $44M dollar jackpot.

“I sent someone out to get my wife, who was waiting in the car,” he explained. “When she came in, I told her we’d won and how much, and she just went white!”

Putland’s lottery win in the Aug. 8 LOTTO 6/49 draw will also be big for players of a different sport, as he plans to honour a loved one.

“My cousin just passed away,” Putland said. “I would like to fix up the ball diamonds in our hometown and name them in his honour. He was my best friend.”

In addition to giving the Prince Albert diamonds a makeover, Putland already has some other big plans, including travelling with friends and family and paying off a recently-purchased truck.

Putland’s good fortune is also going to be passed along to future generations.

“My number one priority is to help all of my kids and put money into my grandkids’ education,” he said. “My wife was a teacher, so I’ve put her in charge of navigating that.”
