Mikolayenko showcases Ukrainian heritage as part of Culture Days
Saskatchewan is celebrating Ukrainian Heritage Month for the first time this September.
As part of the Alex Robertson Public Library’s annual Culture Days events, Air Ronge’s Linda Mikolayenko shared with local residents during a special presentation on Thursday what it means to be of Ukrainian descent.
“Because it is a really rich culture, I thought I would focus on one theme and that was the circle,” she explained.
“One of the elements of how the circle is portrayed in Ukrainian culture is through a braided ceremonial bread, which is made into a circle. The word circle in Ukrainian is called kolo and this braided bread comes from that root word and it’s called a kolach. That kolach is used for a number of different occasions. It is often used as welcome greeting and a sign of respect for people.”
