Lac La Ronge manslaughter case results in six year prison sentence
Almost three years after a man was found dead in a home on the Lac La Ronge Indian Band, the woman who killed him has received a six-and-a-half year sentence.
Mary Bird’s appearance Wednesday afternoon in Court of King’s Bench in Prince Albert came almost six months after a jury found her guilty of manslaughter. With credit for time served on remand, she has about three years left to serve.
The case dates back to the late evening hours of Nov. 24, 2023.
Bird, Ballantyne and another man had been drinking and using drugs. As per testimony heard during the two week trial, Bird became angry at Ballantyne after he allegedly made sexual advances towards her and she blacked out.
