Dozens seek support at Lac La Ronge homeless shelter

The Lac La Ronge Indian Band has opened it seasonal homeless shelter at Morin’s Hill.

The shelter officially opened for clients on Oct. 1 and will remain so until sometime next spring. There were 14 clients on the first night of operations, and that number has fluctuated in recent weeks to a high of 27.

The hours of operations for the shelther are 8 p.m. to 8 a.m.

“I think when they had the 27 in there it was full, but it was cold out that night, so they let them in,” said Coun. Ann Ratt, noting she expects demand to increase as the temperatures become colder.

“When they come in and register at 8 p.m., they receive supper, and then throughout the night, they will have snacks, water and tea. In the morning before the clients are sent out, they are served a breakfast with coffee or tea.”

Ideally, Ratt would still like to see the homeless shelter moved to another location, which was originally planned for last year but ultimately didn’t occur. She said if they are able to move to a building off-reserve, it will open the door for more funding opportunities.

Ratt is also hoping to expand hours during the colder months.

“Right now, they’re not going to freeze to death. That’s what our concern is if they sleep outside and it’s winter they can freeze,” she added.

The shelter currently employs a supervisor and three full-time staff. Ratt explained they are looking to hire more employees and those who are interested should apply. She said anyone hired will receive the proper training.

If community members are interested in providing any donations, staff at the shelter will accept socks, underwear, mitts and toques.
