Judge to decide if convicted killer should be sent to federal penitentiary
Judge Robert Lane will determine in a court room Aug. 12 in Prince Albert whether or not the final teen sentenced in the death of La Ronge businessman Simon Grant should be moved to a federal penitentiary.
Back in May, Judge Lane sentenced the man, who was 17 years old at the time of the crime, to a nine-year jail term for the deadly attack on Grant in April 2017. Under the Youth Criminal Justice Act, however, Judge Lane now must determine if the remainder of the sentence should be served in a youth facility, a federal penitentiary or a provincial correctional facility for adults.
Once all matters are concluded by Judge Lane, the man’s defence lawyer Jessie Buydens confirmed a decision will be made on whether her client’s adult sentence will be appealed. During sentencing in May, Judge Lane stated the killing of Grant was reprehensible, unjustified and evil.
The name of the man cannot be published due to provisions under the Youth Criminal Justice Act.
