Penney hired as new Northlands College CEO

John Guy Penney is the new president and CEO of Northlands College.

“It’s been a whirlwind of activity so far,” Penney said Monday during his first day on the job. “It’s an exciting opportunity and I’m really enthusiastic. Today, for the most part, has been spent checking in with folks because we’re about to get started for the new academic year right away. A lot of people are wishing me well in the new position. It’s been a nice day.”

Penney, who is currently in his seventh year with Northlands College, was initially hired as the director of academic programming before most recently having served as a vice-president. Penney has also worked for the Northern Lights School Division (NLSD) in La Loche and La Ronge for more than 20 years as a teacher and administrator. Before joining the college, Penney had previous served three years with the Northern Teacher Education Program as well.

Penney applied for the position of CEO because he felt his experience with academic programming at the college, as well as his decades of work in education, made him well-suited for the job. Penney also currently serves as the second vice-chairperson of NLSD representing Air Ronge, La Ronge, Timber Bay and Weyakwin.

“It’s a good stepping off point into something brand new and I know there will be many opportunities ahead, and I’m looking to learn and grow with the organization,” he said. “In my opinion, the college is in really good shape and we have loyal employees who work very diligently on behalf of our students. We have a wonderful student population, we have a wide array of programs and we’re going to continue to expand upon those programs.”

On behalf of the Northlands College board of directors, Chairperson Victor Fern welcomed Penney to his new position.

“The board of Northlands College is very happy to have someone of Guy’s experience and his thorough understanding of the importance of education in Northern Saskatchewan at the helm as we move forward and continue growing our institution to better serve the post-secondary needs of Northern Saskatchewan,” he said.

Back in May, former CEO Toby Greschner left the organization after seven years at the college. A media release at the time stated he left to pursue other interests.
