Air Ronge and La Ronge are receiving twice as much than usual from the federal Gas Tax Fund (GTF) for the 2019-2020 fiscal year.

According to an Infrastructure Canada press release, Saskatchewan received the first of two $31.2 million installments from the fund, along with a top-up of $61.9 million made available through the 2019 federal budget. The top-up doubles the amount of money for Saskatchewan communities based on their allocations for 2018-2019, which is meant to allow them to carry out infrastructure projects that support the well-bring of their residents. La Ronge will be receiving two payments of $174,000 this fiscal year, while Air Ronge will receiving two payments of $65,000.

“If that is the case and they are providing this extra funding with no strings attached, we definitely appreciate it and we will use it,” La Ronge Mayor Ron Woytowich said after being informed by larongeNOW. “We know we were getting it, but I didn’t know we were getting twice as much and if it’s no strings attached, it definitely will come in handy because the fuel costs came up because of a lot of things.”

The federal GTF is a long-term, indexed source of funding that supports a diverse range of local infrastructure projects across the province each year. The funding is supposed to allow communities to plan for current and future infrastructure priorities. Infrastructure Canada notes the GTF delivers over $2 billion every year to over 3,600 communities across the country.
