Couple launch tae kwon do club in La Ronge

Sep 24, 2019 | 11:18 AM

Residents of the tri-communities are invited to join a new tae kwon do club starting Oct. 1 in La Ronge.

The club is led by Mike and Barbara Lacourciere, who moved to the community about one year ago. The couple ran a tae kwon do club in the Calgary and Okotoks area for close to 10 years and they want to offer lessons in the sport for local residents as well. Mike, who is the head instructor, has a fifth-degree blackbelt while Barbara has a first-degree blackbelt.

“It’s the art of hand and foot fighting,” she said. “It’s stand up fighting. You do sparring, you learn about respect, not just within the art, but outside in the community as well.”

Lessons are available for those at least nine years old to adults, but Lacourciere stated they could accept younger members in the near future if the interest is there. Training will occur Tuesdays and Thursdays at Pre-Cam Community School with beginners starting at 6 p.m., and adults and the more advanced at 7 p.m.

While registration was held Monday at Churchill Community High School, Lacourciere noted those interested in joining can still do so at the first session Oct. 1. It costs $20 to sign up, plus the cost of a uniform and sparring gear. Lacourciere added the cost to join is kept low and covers only essential expenses like insurance.

“In Alberta, we started our classes at age three, but we had a lot more time on our hands,” she said. “We had a location where that’s what we did full-time. We had more time to teach and offer more programs in the community.”

Lacourciere also mentioned her husband is well-trained in tae kwon do having competed on the provincial, national and international stage.
