Snow falls in La Ronge with cool temperatures on the way

Residents of the tri-communities woke up Tuesday to a thin layer of snow on the ground.

According to Environment and Climate Change Canada Meteorologist Terri Lang, about two centimeters of snow likely fell overnight with some of it sticking to the ground due to the freezing temperature. She stated most of Western Canada is under a large weather system and there’s snow falling at many weather stations across Saskatchewan.

“It will all move slowly eastward during the day as this big sweeping cold front moves through,” Lang said of the snow. “In behind there’s quite cold air, so I think people are going to be a little bit surprised.”

Extreme fluctuations in weather are common for this time of year, Lang noted, with average highs around 9 C and lows around 0 C. Temperatures in La Ronge, however, will be a bit unseasonal in the coming days with highs in the low single digits and overnight lows around -6 C.

“Once we get this weather system out of the way, which will give some unsettled weather and maybe some more flurries and gusty winds, we’re going to be into some sunnier weather,” Lang said. “But it’s going to be quite on the cold side because it is a ridge of arctic high pressure.”

The forecast for Tuesday calls for light snow with the temperature hovering around 0 C before dropping to -3 C overnight with a chance of flurries. The sun is forecasted to appear Thursday with a daytime high of 5 C and a nighttime low of -6 C.

“It’s that time of year that people need to get into the mindset about driving in the snow and what it means for the roads,” Lang said. “People should be aware of that.”
