Edward Bjarne Wick, was born August 11, 1927 on the family homestead near Northern Light, Saskatchewan to Anna and George Wick. Ed grew up on the family farm, and he often shared stories growing up with 9 siblings. Upon completion of Grade 12, Ed pursued various careers – a nickel mine in Sudbury, mechanical training, cream-tester at the Dairy Pool, and a number of other learning experiences. He became a teacher after attending Normal School in Saskatoon, and taught for a short time at Golden Rod School. He loved challenges and learning, and eventually moved to Edmonton where he worked as an Entitlement Officer at the Veterans’ Hospital. It is there where his advocacy for the un-heard began. At a church function, he met a beautiful young woman named Annette Shirley Martin, and after much persistence they dated, were engaged and married on June 30th 1956. Edward and Shirley purchased their first family home on an acreage in Ardrossan, AB, where they had 3 of their 4 children before moving to the Wick family farm near Hoey, SK, where they raised their family. While on the farm, Ed continued to hold part-time jobs, including driving taxi and school bus. It is also where he took up his passion and destiny to continue speaking up for those who had no voice, as he became involved in the Association for Community Living – a group dedicated to helping and integrating special-needs children and adults. In 1987, Shirley and Edward retired from the farm and moved to Alvena, SK, where they became a part of the community until November of 2017. Edward served with many volunteer organizations throughout his life including but not limited to: Saskatchewan Association for Community Living; Alvena New Horizons; Alvena community bingo; Town council and Mayor of Alvena: the list goes on. In 2016, Shirley was diagnosed with Pulmonary Fibrosis and they moved to Wakaw where they could still live independently but without yard-work and stairs. In April, 2018 Shirley passed away and Ed continued to live in Wakaw until his passing in the early morning hours of Saturday, May 25, 2019. He had been diagnosed with brain cancer only 6 short weeks prior to his passing. Edward was predeceased by his wife Shirley of 62 years; son Brian; his parents Anna and George Wick; his brothers Walter, Eddie, Arne, Julian, Ingvar and Magnus; sisters Esther (Haaken), Thelma (Cornelius) and Marie; sister-in-law Enid (Norman) Moe; brothers-in-law Leonard Martin and Orville Bailey. He leaves to mourn his children Gordon (Myla), Sherry (Ray) and Barry; his grandchildren Olivia, Shawn (Amber), Stacey (Darrell), George, and Prescott; his great grandchildren Kaitlyn, Kirstin, Brian, Lily and Evelen; his brother-in-law Abe Heppner; sister-in-law Ella Bailey, as well as numerous nieces and nephews.
The family wishes to thank the many amazing medical staff, home-care personnel, and Wakaw EMS for ensuring the best of care for Edward during his difficult battle. A Memorial Service will be held at the Saron Lutheran Church south of Hagen, on Saturday, June 1, 2019 at 2:00 p.m. with Pastor Clint Knutson officiating. In lieu of flowers, donations to the Rosthern Hospital would be greatly appreciated. Funeral arrangements have been entrusted to Marc Blondeau of Kushneryk Funeral Service, Wakaw, SK, 306-233-4403.
