Matthew “Fergie” Ferguson Foster passed away peacefully on the morning of Saturday, April 27, 2019 with loved ones at his side. Fergie was born in Perth, Scotland, to Jeanie and Henry Foster, one of ten children. As a young man he learned a trade in blacksmithing before being conscripted into the army where he proudly served for three years before returning to blacksmithing. In 1962, at the age of 23, Fergie came to Canada. Here he joined his sister Madge and brother-in-law Andy in Bounty, Saskatchewan and worked on the Gardiner Dam Project. He moved from farm to farm with his sister’s family, taking on work with Degelman Industries. Fergie eventually settled in Duck Lake with his first wife Ava. Fergie was a wizard at many things from welding to mechanics, gardening to jigsaw puzzles. Fergie eventually met Olga, with whom he shared a deep and abiding love. This was a life-changing event, not only for the two of them, but for all of Olga’s ten children. Fergie loved each of us as his own and each of us immediately understood that it was a good man that became part of our large family
Mom and Ferg married, settling on his land in Duck Lake. Together they built a new home where they worked on the garden and the yard during the warmer months. Together they dug, planted, and put up all kinds of birdbaths, feeders, and houses. During the colder months, Fergie would work in his shop designing and welding a variety of things, we all loved the planters he created for us. He was a master of the jigsaw puzzle and deftly placed tens of pieces while the rest of us struggled to place a single one. Fergie loved to make Mom happy. She found the absolute best in him. And we all benefitted. He readily helped us in any way he could, scraping wall paper, painting, fixing things, he would do anything for us or for anyone who needed a helping hand. When he and Mom joined Rick and Darlene at the acreage, he worked tirelessly on the yard and house there. His was the driving force and inspiration for so many projects. Patient, kind, humble, and so generous of spirit, we were truly blessed to have him enter our lives.
Fergie leaves to cherish his memory; his loving family, Milton Fisher (Karen) and his son Ryan, Jean (Greg Ramage) and their children Carly, Kerry and Jesse, Linda Fisher, Darlene Handley (Rick Parenteau) and their children Andrew and Danelle and Devin, Patty Herriot (Dwight Desormeau) and her children Allen, Jenny and Sarah, Kirk Handley (Connie) and their children Corey and Aaron, George Handley (Joy) and their son Aiden, Bonnie Thurston (Ray) and her children Amy-Lynn, Courtney and Haley, Darwin Handley and his son Noah, Kendall Handley (Bev) and his daughters Kyline, Kelsi and Kendra; as well as numerous great grandchildren; his sisters, Madge MacDonald (Andy), Jessie and Jean (Alan); his brothers, Bill and family, David (Sheila) Peter (Morag); and numerous nieces and nephews.
