Ronald James Gunville (Gunner) passed away in Prince Albert on Tuesday, December 11, 2018 at the age of 48. Ron was born on February 14, 1970, to Chick and Brenda Gunville. He started going to the Communiplex in a baby seat, even before there were seats in the rink. This was the beginning of a lifelong passion, which included playing, coaching, and finally his dream job, Director of Player Personnel for the Prince Albert Raiders.
Ron attended Red Wing, Wesmor and graduated from Carlton High School in 1988. After graduation, he continued to pursue his passion, playing in the WHL with the Prince Albert Raiders, Lethbridge Hurricanes, finishing his junior hockey career in the SJHL with the North Battleford North Stars, earning MVP, Defenceman of the Year and a spot on the SJHL All Star Team. In 1991-92, following junior hockey he had the opportunity to play professional hockey with the ECHL in Louisville, Kentucky, with the Ice Hawks.
Ron and Sherry got married in 1995, welcoming Reed in 1997, Taryn in 2000 and their family was complete. Their lives were filled from then on with time spent at ball diamonds, hockey rinks, dance competitions and recitals, soccer and volleyball games, various school sports, summers at the lake, and family and friend vacations. Ron was extremely proud that Reed and Taryn are both attending university this year, and that Reed was able to continue playing hockey while receiving an education. He was so proud of Taryn and her dedication and hard work in school, and always knew she would succeed in anything she chose to do.
Ron loved all sports, and passed that love on to his kids. Nieces and nephews always looked forward to Uncle Ron watching their games. He was very well known for his ability to remember stats, players and games, down to the smallest details. He looked forward to weekends in the rink with his scouting friends, phone calls while travelling, keeping each other company as they travelled to and from tournaments. He especially enjoyed his hours on the phone talking hockey with Wade Klippenstein and Curtis Hunt.
Forever loved by his wife Sherry, his children, Reed and Taryn, his father, Chick, his brother, Trevor (Celina), his mother in law Sunni Williams (Yvon Desgagnes), his brothers in law Ryan Bear (Darci King) and Riley Bear (Kiley), his sister-in-law Alison Bear (Jackson Crain), and numerous aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews and other family and friends.
Ron was predeceased by his mother, Brenda, in 2017.
It was important to Ron that all kids have a chance to play the game he loved. With that in mind, in lieu of tributes please consider donations to Prince Albert Kid Sport, PO Box 280, Prince Albert, SK S6V 5R5, for donations online please go to: www.kidsportcanada.ca/saskatchewan/prince-albert
