It is with overwhelming sadness that the family of Hilda Smith of Prince Albert, announce her sudden passing on Monday, October 15, 2018 at the age of 91 years.
Hilda was born in Pothouse Lane, Darwen, England on Wednesday, March 16, 1927 to Percy and Sarah (nee Howarth) Howard.
Hilda loved growing up in Pothouse Lane. She always had a story to tell of her younger years, including many adventures together with her sister Edith. The war was a scary time for everyone in England. Hilda would tell stories of life during that time: being able to tell the difference between a German plane and a British plane or when the siren went off and having to hide in the dark. During the war she met a young sailor, the love of her life and the life of the party, Samuel Smith. Sam and Hilda were married on December 6th, 1946. Life was not easy in post war England but Hilda made the best of it. She loved her neighbors and friends and still kept contact with a few of them. In 1966 Sam and Hilda decided to make the move to Canada and started their new life in Prince Albert, Saskatchewan. They moved with their four children, with their fifth being born in Saskatoon to complete their family. Hilda and Sam managed to go back home to England every year where they visited with Kevin, Melvin, Kersti, Tom and Sarah and of course family and friends.
Hilda was a Care Aide at Mont St. Joseph in Prince Albert. She liked working there, but she loved the friendships that she made there more. She would have a good laugh talking about the antics that her and her friend Peggy would get into. Her final caregiving job was taking care of her grandchildren. Jaysen, Shaelyn and Payton will always remember their time with grandma and grandpa.
The past two years Hilda was a resident of Caleb Village “the all-inclusive senior resort”. She met many new friends and she absolutely enjoyed every moment of her time there. She had many good times and laughs with her friends Betty, Donna, Ann, and Fern… “The Golden Girls”. She was always so happy to have a visit with her good friend Pat. We will always be grateful to all these wonderful ladies. They looked out for and looked after each other. We would like to thank each and every staff member at Caleb Village for the care and friendship that you show Hilda. She truly enjoyed living there.
Hilda is survived by her children, Melvin and Kevin in England, Susan Hustej, Peter and Wayne (Tracey); her grandchildren, Jaysen (Nicole) Hustej, Kersti (Sam), Tom (Laura), Sarah, Shaelyn (Logan) and Payton; her great-grandchildren, Caleb, Willow, Raine, Maisy and Mason. She was predeceased by her parents, Percy and Sarah Howard; her siblings, Nellie, Edna, Jack, Leslie and Edith; her husband, Sam; and her son–in-law, Edward Hustej. We can all imagine the wonderful celebration in heaven right now.
Until we meet again… Bye Love!
