It is with great sadness that the family of Joan “Joni” Frances Hladun, (nee Taylor) announces her passing on October 7, 2018, at the Victoria Hospital in Prince Albert, SK, at the age of 70 years. Despite her unexpected and rapid health decline, Joni passed away peacefully with hands gently held by those who loved her.
Joni was born January 11, 1948, in Edmonton, AB, and grew up on various military bases across Canada and Germany. On April 28, 1979, she married her sweetheart Ben Hladun and together they lovingly raised their daughter Cei-Cei, along with a procession of Scottish Terriers over the years. In her younger years she worked as a dental assistant and in her later years as a Home Care Aid for the Prince Albert Parkland Health Region.
Joni was an active member of the Canadian Mental Health Association, Prince Albert Branch and sat on the board for several years. The board has voted to name the new mental health six plex housing development “JONI’S PLACE ” in honor of Joni’s long term commitment to CMHA P.A. Branch as our board member. The development is currently under construction with completion scheduled for April 2019.
Joni’s lifelong passion and natural flair for fashion, home Christmas decorating, and yard and garden design was undeniable. She won best of show in the YWCA Garden Tours held in 2000 and 2001. She won the City of Prince Albert Golden Spade Award in 2017 for best front yard.
A special thanks goes out to Dr. N. Le Roux and the nursing staff at the Victoria Hospital for their compassionate care during Joni’s stay.
Joni will be lovingly remembered and cherished always by her husband of 39 years, Ben Hladun; her daughter, Cei-Cei (Rich) Umpherville; her granddaughter, Layla Umpherville; her sister, Cheryl (Sonny) Parisien of Winnipeg, MB; her brother, William Taylor of Winnipeg, MB; along with her numerous extended family members. She was predeceased by her parents, Norman and Jill Taylor.
