Mrs. Phyllis Bernice MacKay late of Prince Albert, SK, passed away at the age of 96. Phyllis was born on April 9, 1922, in St. Louis, SK where she took her high school education. She attended Saskatoon Normal School and taught school for 41 years in Buckland, Hagen, Saskatoon and Prince Albert.
Phyllis served in the Royal Canadian Airforce April 1952 – Sept 1954 in Whitehorse. She was a breast cancer survivor, a volunteer for the cancer society, CanSurmount and was recognized for her 50-year commitment. Phyllis was also very sports minded, she was the pitcher for the Saskatoon Pats, she enjoyed it to its limit. She was a member of Beta Sigma Phi for the past 60 years and had never missed a meeting. Phyllis sang with The Watsonaires for 52 years. She was inducted into Prince Albert Council of Women’s Hall of Fame in 2010. Phyllis’s dedication to our community was remarkable, all her work with Beta Sigma Phi, Red Cross, CanSurmount, Superannuated Teachers, Presbyterian Church was very much appreciated. Her career in the Air Force, as a teacher, and a professional ballplayer made for a very fulfilling life. Those that knew her knew of her whistling ability and that she had made recordings, whistled on CBC and numerous celebrity affairs. Phyllis had touched many people, whether it was singing in a choir playing baseball or educating students. On behalf of Phyllis, she would want us to encourage our talents, to mentor the next generation to foster the leadership management and professional skills that she had clearly mastered.
Special thanks to Mak Lodge and Herb Bassett and to Phyllis’s many friends who took the time to visit Phyl.
Phyllis is survived by her cousins: Allan Lovell, Richard Miller, Bob Deschner and their families
