EVELYN CHAPUIS – “What a lovely morning”, Evelyn said as she looked out the window on one of her last days. She passed away May 16, 2018 at her home in Prince Albert. Evelyn was born March 21, 1929 and grew up in Muenster, Saskatchewan with her father, Francis Fernholz, grandparents, aunts, uncles and cousins.
She attended school in Muenster and Bruno, followed by the University of Saskatchewan. She received her B.A. in 1949 when she was only 20 years old. An Education Degree and Master’s Degree in English Literature followed. She started her career in small town Saskatchewan and moved to Prince Albert to work at PACI and then was asked to join the new staff when Riverside High School opened.
Meanwhile, she met a dashing veterinarian named Bernard. After a glamorous courtship involving country calls and X-rays, they got married and settled in their house on the hill. Their two children, Mary and Paul, enjoyed growing up in a house filled with books and art and good friends.
Evelyn switched from high school to early childhood education when her children were young and taught kindergarten for a year. Later she went back to older students and taught first year English for the U of S, mostly in Prince Albert but also in Shellbrook and La Ronge. Evelyn loved all activities related to nature. She spent many happy hours identifying plants, bird watching and doing photography. She also loved books. She was asked to edit and review books, and she read many. She loved her meetings with her book club as well. When she was less mobile, her book club always came to her house.
Evelyn is survived by her husband Bernard of 55 years; her children, Mary (Colin Chovin) and Paul (Laura Metz); and grandsons Jack and Levi.
Thank you to Evelyn’s dear friends Murdine McCreath, Alma Newman, Janna Anderson and Anita Ruel. Many thanks to the wonderful staff of Prince Albert Home Care; the many personal care aids and nurse practitioner, Tanya Miller. They assisted Evelyn for the past year and a half. The help and support she received could be described as not only practical and efficient but also very kind and caring. In her last week, they helped make it possible for her to stay at home as she wished.
Evelyn was cremated at a family gathering on Thursday, May 17. Her funeral will be on Friday, June 22 at 2:00 pm at Sacred Heart Cathedral, 1401 4 Ave. West, Prince Albert, with a social event to follow.
Funeral arrangements are entrusted to the care of River Park Funeral Home, Paula Hanson, Funeral Director.
