Flashing lights with activation buttons to be installed at four crosswalks

La Ronge council has decided crosswalks at four locations will be fitted with flashing lights to alert motorists of passing pedestrians.

The decision was made at a regular council meeting Jan. 23 after it was brought up at a previous meeting by Coun. Matthew Klassen. He said the idea was brought forward to him by a resident at a public forum and he thought it was a good idea as well. The flashing lights will be solar-powered and will be activated by pressing a button on either side of the crosswalk.

“We have to design it and choose the actual light fixtures and structures themselves, so the cost is unknown at this time,” Klassen said, adding local contractors will have a chance to bid on the project. “There are a couple of grants available for public and traffic safety we will be applying for and hopefully we can do this project without a cost to our residents.”

The locations of the crosswalks to be fitted with lights include the intersection of Boardman St. and Studer St., the intersection of Boardman St. and Diefenbaker Cres., the intersection at Hildebrand Dr. and Backlund St. across from the Mel Hegland Uniplex, and one crossing Studer St. to Morley Wilson (Quarry) Park. The first two locations are heavily used by students who attend Pre-Cam Elementary School.
