CCHS students preparing for Skills Canada Provincial Competition

Students from Churchill Community High School will represent northern Saskatchewan in the Skills Canada Provincial Competition next month in Saskatoon.

“There are 46 different trades students can enrol in,” teacher Connie Haugen said. “We just ask students if they are interested in joining Skills Canada and if they say yes, we set up a practice schedule [for] whichever trade they’re interested in and we go from there.”

In all, five students will represent Churchill in a variety of trades such as baking (Lily Markwart), cooking (Kelli Young), cosmetology (Kayla Fedje and Sienna Mckenzie) and public speaking (Heidi Merriman). While many of them are just beginning to practice the skills, Young competed at the Northern Regional Skills Competition held Wednesday in Meadow Lake to secure her spot at provincials. The Grade 10 student prepared for the judges a seared pork tenderloin with garlic mashed-potato puree, roasted vegetables and a paté sucree lemon tart with roasted coconut.

“I had Mrs. Haugen help me a lot,” Young said. “She got me interested and really into it, but I practiced a lot and watched a lot of videos on it.”

When deciding upon the dish she wanted to present, Young noted there’s not a lot of options as everyone in the competition generally has to cook the same dish. For the provincial competition April 12, she will be preparing a three-course meal including a French carrot soup, chicken cacciatore with homemade pasta in red tomato sauce and chocolate mousse for dessert.

Students from Churchill compete at the Provincial Skills Competition every year. Last year, a student from the school placed second in baking.
